Journey for Freedom!

My wife grew up under the harsh dictatorial regime of Nicolae Ceausescu, a little man who committed horrendous atrocities against his own people. The Romanian people had to do without much of the advantages which I too often take for granted.

I'm speaking, primarily, of course, about songs from the 80s.

So the past 10 years has been a kind of re-education for my wife. I've been her teacher.

And I haven't been a very good one. Short of strapping her into a chair and toothpicking her eyelids open in front of a VH1 marathon, however, I had pretty much run out of options.

Until yesterday. We had a breakthrough. Softly, oh so softly, I heard these delicate words emanating from the kitchen, sounding like a cross between Count Chocula and a 'Sherry' era Steve Perry (when his magical voice began its tragic descent into Screech):

'Leeving vithout you
Leeving alooone;
Dees empty house seem so cooold;
Vanting to hold you,
Vanting you near,
How much I vanted you hooome...'

Oh, sweet, breakthrough! 'Open Arms' had never before sounded so, well, Balkan. I rushed in to hold her. I told her it wasn't her fault. I shed a single, symbolic tear for Democracy, and we finished the verse...

together:

"But now that you've come back!
Turned night into daaaay!
Iiiiii, need you to.....stayyyyyyyy!"
